EV Diaries

An Electric Vehicle (EV) adventure travel blog based out of Melbourne, Australia

The EV Manifesto: an EV-powered return to nature

This blog began with a simple idea: that you can live a big, adventurous, outdoorsy life with an electric car. You don’t need a gas-guzzling four-wheel drive or a long-range tank to explore the wild corners of Victoria. You just need a bit of curiosity, a willingness to plan, and a quiet motor that hums you toward the horizon.

We’re a family based in Melbourne, and like many others, we wanted to get out of the city on weekends — to hike, picnic, explore, and spend time offline. But we’re also a one-car household: and that car is an EV. We did wonder if our small electric SUV might limit the lifestyle when we bought it. Would we be stuck close to home? Would we constantly be worried about running out of charge?

The answer, it turns is that we absolutely can still have an outdoor lifestyle—and that an EV can actually enhance and deepen our adventures exploring nature. This blog is a record of those trips. It’s a practical, personal guide to all the places we’ve reached in our electric vehicle, grouped by how far they are and how much charge they require: some with no recharge at all, some with one quick top-up, and others that need a little more planning and patience. It’s for EV owners who want to explore more, and for anyone curious about what’s really possible with electric travel.

But this isn’t just about the logistics of battery life. It’s about something deeper: a return to nature in a world that rarely slows down. The more time we spend out there — hiking among granite peaks, cooking lunch at a trailhead, or letting the kids run barefoot through a forest — the more we remember why we wanted this in the first place. It’s not just to get away from the city, but to get back to something real, something grounded.

Ironically, technology is helping us do that. Our EV doesn’t dominate the landscape; it glides through it. The EV doesn’t rely on fossil fuels to reach the calm afforded by nature— it does so quietly, cleanly, and efficiently. In an age of constant digital noise, it’s a tool that helps us disconnect in and integrate with the outdoors more seamlessly.

So that’s what you’ll find here: stories of real trips, taken in a real EV, by a real family. Each post is a mix of experience and strategy — what we saw, how it felt, and how we made it work logistically. We’ll highlight destinations that are EV-friendly, share tips for managing longer or more remote drives, and offer honest ratings to help others plan their own adventures. We will begin with a series of posts on easy trips at Melbourne’s doorstep that require no re-charging before we ratchet up the adventure with trips further afield in Victoria. We’ll also share what works best for families, because we know that what’s “easy” changes dramatically when you’re wrangling kids, snacks, and muddy shoes.

If you’re already driving an EV and wondering how far it can really take you — this blog is for you. And if you’re just dreaming of a different kind of weekend, one that smells like eucalyptus and ends with tired feet and happy faces, this blog is for you too. We hope it inspires you to unplug, power up, and get out there.
